School Council

Why do we have a School’s Council?

The School’s Council is an ideal opportunity for pupils to get more involved in the way the school is run. The School Council benefits the whole school, pupils and teachers because it provides opportunities for pupils to communicate their feelings as well as influence decisions that are made. Councillors develop skills such as confidence, communication and negotiation. It is the responsibility of each Councillor to ensure that they express both their own views and the views of all the other pupils they represent.

Who can be a member of the School’s Council?

We have an active School’s Council with a boy and girl representing their fellow pupils from Early Years to Year 6. Each councillor is elected by their classmates at the beginning of the year, after a short presentation explaining why they should be elected.

Our School Council is an important part of our school’s Pupil Voice. Issues are discussed in Class Council Meetings and then the children’s views are brought to the School Council by the representatives.  We feel that the school council is an important way to teach children about the importance of democracy and decision-making.

School Council actions

The School Council are always very busy once elected in September! They speak to their respective classes and gather information from their peers with regards to what the children love about the school and what they would like to improve. These issues could be anything form the way the behaviour policy is implemented to the smell of the soap!

The councillors help to support various charities over the year by organising and designing posters and they often work with other groups of children, like the Play Leaders, to launch initiatives.

We are very proud of our Councillors and they work they do to encourage all pupils to:

  • Feel included

  • Think about others and their rights

  • Extend their language and thinking skills

  • Use the language of respect and responsibility

  • Understand the difference between wants and needs
