Music

At Manor Fields Primary, we are committed to ensuring that our children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community. We aim to endow them with the ability to use their musical skills, knowledge and experiences to involve themselves in music with confidence, in a variety of different contexts.

Music lessons at Manor Fields are the foundation upon which children build their understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing music across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. At the core of our lessons is a focus on developing a curiosity for the subject and an acceptance and understanding of the validity and importance of all styles of music alongside a genuine respect for the role that music has in any person’s life.

Our core aims are:

  • To be both critical and respectful in listening to and reviewing music across a wide range of traditions, contexts, genres and historical periods. This will include work by some of the Great Composers as well as music from traditions outside Western culture.
  • To be confident performers of music who are able to use instruments and their voices to perform alone and with others, music from a range of historical periods from a wealth of genres and traditions.
  • To be adventurous composers who are able to use their voices, various instruments and technology where appropriate to express themselves through the creation of new music.
  • To develop a knowledge of musicianship through an understanding of how music is created, produced and communicated, including through inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and appropriate musical notations. .
  • To be individuals who recognise and celebrate diversity through experiencing a wealth of traditions and genres and exploring them with cultural sensitivity and respect for their validity as musical art.
